Williamson County Growth Summit: Examining Austin City’s Transportation Problems

The annual Austin Business Journal’s Williamson County Growth Summit, held last month was a great opportunity to discuss and find solutions to some of the biggest challenges faced by Austin city and its suburban areas.


The summit saw some well-known personalities in the field of transportation and technology sharing their views and opinions. Some of the notable speakers at the event included Uber Technologies Texas External Affairs Director Leandre Johns, RideScout LLC founder Joseph Kopser, along with AgroDesign’s Jared Ficklin, a product designer for an eye for transportation infrastructure


Another notable panel member was Mike Heiligenstein, Executive Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority in Austin, Texas. Heiligenstein currently serves as the President of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association along with being the Executive Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority in Austin, Texas.


One of the main topics was about the use of technology to help improve the stress on Austin’s roads and to provide better transportation facilities. The summit maintained that living in an era of scientific development has given rise to new means of technology like self-driving cars and ride sharing apps. This can also be used with new advanced solutions to ease the problems of transportation and infrastructure development.


Mike Heiligenstein, while discussing the topic during the panel, emphasized the need for Austin to be equipped with smarter roads, like twelve lane streets to fulfill the growing need of accommodation. In the past, Mike Heiligenstein’s input on matters dealing with transportation in Austin City has demonstrated to be of an extremely high importance and has been a valuable asset in the growth of the city’s transportation infrastructure.


The panel was filled with a number of noteworthy points which could help ease the situation on Austin City’s roads. Among them were talks of future garages spanning over five storeys in height and discussions of how Uber and other ridesharing transportation means will help give Austin a solution to its transportation problems.


While the talk of the self-driving cars came up countless times, the panel members including Mike Heiligenstein acknowledged the idea as a ‘slow but inevitable process’ owing to the slow growth rate and limitations of current technological advances in the field of smart cars.

  1. The summit had open discussions about a range of topics dealing with the transportation and infrastructure problems that Austin was currently facing.
