Larkin and Lacey Still in the Fight Against Arpaio

Once again, Joe Arpaio is clearly angling for attention. This time, he’s running for one of the senate seats in Arizona. His opponents are a conservative, Senator Kelli Ward and the moderate candidate, Martha McSally. All three are fighting for the seat held by the retiring incumbent, Sen. Jeff Flake. In 2008, both Larkin and Lacey were unlawfully arrested in the dead of night by a Maricopa County Selective Enforcement unit traveling in unmarked cars by the order of Sheriff Arpaio.

The so-called charge was that they were exposing information about a grand jury investigation. In actuality, the investigation was into their behavior as newsmen. Arpaio was determined to end the exposés they relentlessly printed in the Phoenix New Times exposing his wrongs.

They were held for 24 days. Upon their release they filed a lawsuit for their unlawful arrest and incarceration. They won and were awarded damages in the amount of $3.7 million. With that $3.7 million Larkin and Lacey started the Frontera Fund. It was founded to help Latinos fight for the protection of their First Amendment Rights. In the meantime, Joe Arpaio was convicted in July 2017 of a misdemeanor offense for contempt of court during the Melendres lawsuit. He would have to serve six months in jail.

After the lawsuit, Arpaio did not win re-election as sheriff, but Arpaio is a very perceptive man. He could see the tide turning in Donald Trump, the Republican Presidential candidate’s favor, so he endorsed him early in his run for office.

As Donald Trump was campaigning he repeatedly stated that he intended to pardon Joe Arpaio and within one year of taking the oath of office, that’s what he did. Joe Arpaio was pardoned by President Trump.

After receiving his pardon from the president, Arpaio is once again emboldened to pursue his agenda of terrorizing Hispanics under the guise of keeping illegals out of the United States.
